Big Databases & Cloud Services

[ Course mailing list | Lecture slides | Homework Assignments | Literature ]

In this course, the state of the art in Big Data management and retrieval is discussed with specific emphasis on flexibility and scalability. First, query processing in SQL is inspected to understand opportunities of optimization and parallelization. NewSQL provides new, particularly effective relational technology. Further, NoSQL approaches are considered which provide new data models, such as documents, graphs and arrays, together with dedicated architectures. This will be contrasted with MapReduce-based query processing. This will lead to general scalability considerations, with an emphasis on large scale parallel and distributed processing. Finally, we briefly address security issues and approaches to overcome them. As a result of this course, students will know the state of the art in data management for particularly large and complex data, with guidance on how to choose and use cloud-based data service technology.

If you attend the course, make sure you are subscribed to that list to not miss important information! I will NOT make use of the Campus.net course list (not even reading it)!
