Regional Workshop for Space Physicists from Central and Eastern Europe
Sinaia, Romania, June 4-16, 2007
Solar-Terrestrial Interactions:
Instrumentation and Techniques
(STIINTE)
The sixth COSPAR Capacity Building Workshop was held in Sinaia, Romania,
from June 4-16, 2007. The final report for the sponsoring agencies
can be accessed here.
The final version (1 June 2007) of the online workshop announcement
can still be accessed: click here
to find an introduction to the topics addressed in the course of the
school, a description of the target audience, and further information
on registration, Sinaia, etc.
Scientific Programme, Workshop Schedule, and Projects
In the first week (lecture week) two types of instruction units were
offered. In the morning hours, lectures (60 minutes each) addressed a broad
spectrum of issues ranging from spacecraft missions and instrumentation to
data analysis techniques and modeling. The methods and tools introduced in
these lectures were practised in hands-on computer sessions that took place
in a computer room equipped with 26 Linux workstations. Various software
environments such as IDL and Matlab were offered.
The lecture notes and
computer assignments
(including software and data) are still online. To find the
scientific programme and the workshop schedule with active links and
pointers to the files,
go here (html).
A pdf version of the final workshop
schedule is also available.

In the second week (project week) the workshop participants
formed groups and worked on data analysis and modeling projects
related to the subjects of the workshop. On Thursday, 14 June 2007,
the groups presented their results in the context of the STIMM-2 workshop
that took place from 12-16 June 2007 in the same location.
Further information (including the final presentations and photos of the project teams)
can be found
here.
Project topics
- Auroral Knight relation using electric field and particle data
- What are the proper solar wind inputs for predicting geomagnetic indices?
- Determination of the macroscopic parameters of the Earth's magnetopause
- Estimation of the IMF disturbances propagation delay time
- Test of collisionless transport equations in the solar wind
Afterwards, the STIINTE participants had the opportunity to take part
in the STIMM-2 workshop.
Organisation
Venue
The workshop took place in the
Hotel COTA 1400 in Sinaia. This hotel was already chosen as the venue
for the
first STIMM workshop
in September 2005. The
second STIMM workshop
took place in the same location. The hotel offers a comfortable, three stars
ambient, combined with the tranquility of a mountain chalet and a
panoramic view over the Prahova valley.
During the workshop (from Monday evening, June 4th, until Saturday morning, June 16th)
full board accomodation was provided to all students at no cost, with two students
per room.
Sponsors
This meeting was the sixth in a series of
COSPAR
Capacity-Building Workshops. It was co-sponsored and supported by the
and others.
