Dear visitor

This symposium combines insights from a number of disciplines, ranging across the humanities, the sciences and the social sciences, focused on the consequences of cultural and economic changes in the production and consumption of energy in Western societies. Such changes result from protection of scarce resources and the environment and concerns of supply security.
Development and adoption of new sources of energy depends not only on economic efficiency and scientific research, but on public behaviour influenced by perceptions of science, environment and risk.

The conference will deal with 4 different fields of Energy in Changing Environments:

  • Energy Efficiency

The new buzzword in energy policy is energy efficiency, or ‘doing more with less’. More rational use of energy saves scarce resources and protects the environment. The key question is how to achieve effective energy efficiency?

  • Gas supply and Geopolitics

The boom in India and China causes gas to be scarce; as a result, major gas exporters, like Russia, are strategically repositioning their gas supply, with strong consequences for gas import strategies in e.g. Europe.

  • Technological Advance

New directions in energy supply predominantly aim at energy efficiency and environmental protection. Promising options (e.g. fuel cells or carbon capture and storage) require significant technological progress before they are technically or economically feasible. How far are we?

  • Energy and Environment.

Climate change is the overwhelming concern momentarily and is on many people’s minds. Energy policy agendas in many parts of the world are driven by environmental protection. What are the problems and prospects for an environmentally friendly energy policy.
